Why is “dog age × 7” inaccurate?
Dogs do not age at a constant rate. They mature quickly during their first two years: a common veterinary comparison places age one around 15 human years and age two around 24. The seven-year shortcut would make a two-year-old dog only 14, understating that early development.
After age two, adult size makes an increasing difference. In the AAHA chart, a 10-year-old small dog is about 56, a medium dog 60, a large dog 66, and a very large dog 78 in human-year terms. That does not mean every dog follows one curve; it is a reminder that size, breed, and individual health all shape aging.

What can the result actually tell you?
The most useful purpose of a “human age” is to help a household picture a life stage—not to label a dog as young or old. Use the result as a prompt: when was the last checkup, and have teeth, weight, activity, sleep, appetite, or movement changed over time?
Today versus the last few months is usually more useful than comparing two dogs of the same age.
Note when a change started, how long it lasts, and the context; that is more useful than writing “getting old.”
Breed, medical history, body condition, and exam findings all shape the right care plan for this dog.
Pain, breathing difficulty, sudden weakness, or a marked behavior change deserves veterinary attention regardless of the number.
